PRESCHOOL PROGRAM – Charter Oak Children’s Center

The Charter Oak Children’s Center (C.O.C.C.) is a licensed child care and preschool program serving children 2 to 5 years in the diverse communities of the San Gabriel Valley.

The center is committed to excellence in early care and education for children two to five years and provides quality child care and developmentally appropriate learning environments to support children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive well-being.

We strive to create an inviting, nurturing predictable and stable environment so that children feel safe and secure as they explore their world.

Children are admitted into the various programs regardless of income, ethnicity, gender, culture, language, family values or developmental differences upon availability. Applications are processed throughout the year. After capacity has been reached, a waiting list is implemented.

CORE VALUES The Charter Oak Children’s Center (C.O.C.C.) staff believes the first five years are essential to becoming a lifelong learner. The center is a nurturing community where staff support and foster positive relationships with children and families, implement continuity of care and primary care giving systems as well as engaging in a wide variety of activities that foster personal growth and development. At the C.O.C.C., children will:

  • Learn through interaction and collaboration with their environment, peers, and staff
  • Play—a natural mode of learning—provides opportunities to explore materials, people and oneself
  • Develop at their own pace and are motivated by personal desires to make sense of the world around them
  • Thrive from connectivity with loving, responsive teachers in their environment
  • Feel secure in a structured environment with well-defined limits that foster independence, choice, and challenge
  • Learn self-discipline as they learn respect from themselves, others, and the surrounding environment

A DAY IN C.O.C.C.

Greeting Time: Students greet each other, sing songs, recite nursery rhymes, and are engaged in group activities.

Snack Time: Students improve eating and self-help skills, practice communication, taste different foods, and work on table manners.

Small Group Time: Children work in an area of the classroom or on an activity to practice their developmental goals. A variety of activities and lessons are presented to promote growth and development.

Large Group Time: Children come together with the teacher to play games, sing songs, perform plays, learn dances, play musical instruments, exercise, read and tell stories. Children learn to participate in activities as a member of a group.

Socialization/Self-Help: Children learn to interact with other classmates and teachers. They may play inside or outside the classroom and take part in art, games, music, or other activities. Hand washing and potty training is addressed and is part of the school day.

Circle Time: Children engage in reading readiness, listening, speaking, and writing activities that focus on academic concepts and learning as a group.

Outside Time: Playground and play equipment provide children with opportunities for movement, exploration, and improved locomotion, balance and creative play. Our water and sand tables allow for additional opportunities to explore the environment.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENT California law requires all children enrolled in our center to be immunized. Children will not be enrolled unless an immunization record is presented and immunizations are up to date. If your child is unimmunized for medical reasons, please notify us. To access information about immunization requirements, educational materials, and information about California Immunization law, go to ShotsForSchool.org.

VOLUNTEERS Adults who wish to volunteer in the classroom also must have immunization requirements. They must have current tuberculosis (TB) clearance and must also provide an immunization record showing that they have been immunized against influenza, pertussis and measles.

We create an environment that invites children to observe, be active, and make choices and experiment. I hope you are as eager as we are to watch your little ones grow and develop! We look forward to partnering with you.
