Welcome Bulldog Families -
I am beyond excited to introduce myself as Washington Elementary's new principal. In getting to know Washington, not only am I continually hearing about Washington's exceptional staff and long-standing tradition of excellence, but about the strength of the community. Time and again those I speak with enthusiastically share about Washington's warm, friendly environment and amazingly supportive families. One of my favorite parts of serving as a principal is connecting with students and families and spending time together at school events. I am eagerly awaiting meeting the many wonderful families that make Washington such a special place. For those of you new to our district, welcome to Charter Oak Unified.
Our parent handbook is available through your parent portal or on our school website at www.cousd.net/washington. The handbook contains important information regarding school schedules, playground rules, cell phones, electronic devices, school discipline policy, and more. It is important that you read these policies and discuss them with your child. During the data confirmation process, you were asked to sign off and agree to these policies and procedures.
Within the handbook are a few important items I would like to draw your attention to. First, students should not arrive on campus prior to 7:30 AM. There is no campus supervision until this time, and it is unsafe to have them onsite. We understand that work schedules or other factors may make this difficult, however, please make every attempt to adhere to these times for the safety of your child.
Secondly, traffic activity both before and after school is always a great challenge on every campus. There is only one way into our parking lot, and all cars should enter the lane closest to the curb for drop-off, at the back of the line. The lane closest to the street is used to exit the parking lot. Traffic should only ever move from the inside lane to the outside and then to the exit. This is important to avoid collisions with other cars and keep traffic moving. Most importantly. the second lane is a no unloading or loading zone. If you have a need to get out of your car, we ask that you find parking in the lot or down a surrounding street so as not to disrupt the flow of drop-off/pick-up. Students cannot cross through the first line of traffic to approach your vehicle. This is a safety concern and staff will ask for you to circle around and go through the line to pick up your student. We apologize for the inconvenience of this but keeping students safe is our highest priority. Thank you for your cooperation as we work together to keep all of our Bulldogs safe.
Finally, we love having parents, grandparents, and any other family members visit/volunteer in our classrooms. Please make sure that if you are on campus you have visited the office for a visitor badge. Additionally, we need a TB test within the last 4 years, a copy of your driver’s license, and a volunteer form completed on file in the office prior to volunteering.
Our Washington staff has taken great care in assigning students to their classes. We place children thinking about balancing our rooms in terms of academic needs, learning styles, interpersonal relationships, leadership, gender, and other factors. It is our policy not to make requested teacher assignment changes during the first weeks of school unless it is necessary for further balancing of classes.
Be on the lookout for our weekly parent email which will contain our Bulldog Bulletin, which is filled with information about the upcoming week at Washington. These will arrive Monday morning each week.
I am looking forward to an amazing school year as we work together in finding success for all students! Please feel free to contact the office if you have any questions or concerns at (626) 914-2704.
Looking forward to working alongside you in this historic return to school. We could not be happier to have your children back on campus!
